There Is Something About Michaels

What is in a name? The name Michael, it is believed, was first derived from the name Mikha’el, meaning “who is like God” in Hebrew. Wikipedia was kind enough to give further explanation as thus: Michael is a masculine given name derived from the Hebrew phrase מי כאל‎ mī kāʼēl, ‘Who [is] like-El’, in Aramaic: ܡܝܟܐܝܠ (Mīkhāʼēl [miχaˈʔel]). The theophoric name is a rhetorical question – “Who [is] like [the Hebrew God] El?”,[1] whose answer is “there is none like El”, or “there is none as famous and powerful as God.” This question is known in Latin as Quis ut Deus?. Although sometimes considered erroneous, an alternative spelling of the name is Micheal. (by the way if you ever have some extra cash, throw it Wikipedia’s way – they are a super resource for a TON of things). So may Michael really means not like God? Who knows.

Some of my favorite women and I are surrounded by Michaels and we are better for it. One of my best friends’ forever love is a Michael and I will let her tell the story of how her family is sprinkled with Michaels in another post. My best guy friend’s name is also Michael although I only call him that when I’m trying to get his attention. He will forever be “Mike” to me. He is my big brother in spirit and I am a better person because he has been in my life for so long.

A dear friend of mine – one of the sweetest souls to work the earth also had a Michael in her life. She sweetly called him “My Mikey”. Their love story was one that needed retelling as she did not find him “the first time” like some women. She had to go through a less loving relationship before she found her soul mate. Not everyone finds their soulmate and sometimes they are not available or society deems it wrong to love that person. . .but lucky her — she found him and they were enveloped in their love.

He was a kind man who knew the woman she loved was precious. I had the pleasure of meeting him and knowing him casually. Our paths did not cross often but when they did, I enjoyed his company. He had a sweet smile and kind eyes much like my dear old Dad. He was respectful without being stuffy, he was approachable but protected as if he was saving the best of himself for his love.

People say some people are TOO GOOD for this world. While I don’t believe that myself I choose to think that just for this moment as I look back on my friend’s sweet Mikey. He left Earth Monday, January 31 right before Lunar New Year. When she was able to share the news with me I have to admit I began sobbing. Like I said, Mikey and I did not interact often but my love for my friend made the news that much sadder. Having lost people I love recently has made me even more sensitive to the loss of others and I mourned for her. Knowing she was still mourning the death of her mother made my heart ache even more.

So, if you have a Michael in your life, hold him close. There is something about Michaels and we are lucky to have one (or in my case many) cross paths with them. Please send my friend love and light and if you lean that way – prayers so that she may heal and become one again. Rest In Peace sweet Mikey.
