Earth Day

Earth Day is celebrated annually on April 22. When I was a kid I was never specifically told WHY we have an earth day. I know now that in spring of 1970, Senator Gaylord Nelson created Earth Day as a way to force the issue of protecting the environment, restoring damage ecosystems and to encourage living a more sustainable life onto the national agenda. Before then there were no legal or regulatory mechanisms to protect our environment. Earth Day was first celebrated in 1970 so this year marks its 52nd anniversary.

It’s kind of pathetic that we as Americans have to be FORCED to put into place issues that should be a concern for every earthling. But I think we get so focused on what is happening at the moment we do forget to think broader. How many of us today is doing our best just to get our kids or ourselves to our destinations so we can get through the day and get home and go to bed to start over again? How many times do we actually think about our environment?

So what do busy but concerned Americans do? We hire people to take care of it because we are busy living our lives LOL. I’m sure many of you have heard of the EPA. As we learned in the late 1960s and early 19670s about the impact of pesticides on our soil, the air and water pollution created by our success and new found wealth the EPA was organized to help us not completely destroy our natural resources.

But like everything else with good intentions, the attention to our environment waxes and wanes depending on the political flavor of the day. I’m not a doomsayer – I’m not saying we should not do ANYTHING. We can all do our part but people have to actually CARE about it for it to have an impact. I don’t think throwing money at it will ever solve the problem.

So, today on Earth Day just read about what is happening to our environment and see if there is anything that YOU as an individual earthling can do to help a little bit. Every little bit helps, I think. And yes, I know our planet will die regardless but wouldn’t it be nice to live on a better planet until it does? Just saying.
